First Draft Of Music Video: Develop And Realize

This is an unfinished draft of my music video. So far I like the way the stop motion has worked but there are some improvements to be made such as:

  • Footage has to be longer to suit the length of video
  • lighting and picture colour could needs to be changed
  • add titles of song, artist and creator

Music Video Materials: Develop And Realize

This video is the guide I will use to create my music video successfully:

I will use play dough clay as its easier to mould into different shapes:

I will use my kitchen table as the location for shooting the music video as its spacious enough and has the best lighting in the house.

Music Video Idea Mindmap: Develop And Realize

I have Chosen to do my 4th idea, which is to make a stop motion animated music video to Allison Harvard's song 'Underwater', I have chosen this because I think the song has such interesting lyrics, and remaking a more exiting and perfectly matching music video will be an exciting challenge.

Music Video Ideas: Develop And Realize

Idea 1:
Two years ago I wrote a song and recorded it myself using an online software, the song was call ‘Kitchen Floor’, there is no existing music video for this song so, using two actors (male and female), they will re-enact a domestic violence case to match the tempo and lyrics of the song. This video will be quite dark and depressing like the song, and is inspired by Eminem ‘Love The Way You Lie’.

Idea 2:
One of my favourite songs right now is Ellie Goulding ‘Wish I Stayed. This song was released as an official single but didn’t have a music video to go with. I will make a music video that cleverly contradicts the lyrics. For example, there is a part in the song she says ‘why do I always draw triangles, instead of words this paper so deserves’, in this parts I will show someone scribbling different shapes all over a blank canvas

Idea 3:
I will make a music video that is a montage of a party I will attend in London, I will film the whole party and edit in the most interesting parts to go with the song ‘the song will be chosen after the video is fully edited and finished, because this way I could choose the perfect one (like in films where the soundtrack is chosen after the scene is shot).

Idea 4:
‘Underwater’ is a song by Allison Harvard that I heard on the TV show ‘Americas Next Top Model’, this song has a music video, but I don’t think it matches or works well with the song, so I will recreate it. When hearing this song I immediately got the image of a stop motion music video of clay being shaped and formed into the descriptions of the lyrics.
(Chosen Idea)

Idea 5:
My best friend is part of a band called ‘Live At Soul’ and they have an upcoming gig at a local festival, I will make a live footage themed music video for to match their song, I will use special effects and single camera technique in order to make their gig more interesting, a good example of inspiration is the new music video by Kanye West and Jay z ‘Niggas In Paris’, and another idea inspired by John Mayer’s ‘Why Georgia, is to do a split scene technique, and on one side show the gig, and on the other side to show a montage of the preparation the band went through before the gig.

Graph:
This is a graph showing the results of a question I asked the seven individuals that took part in the Questionnaire  (the question was similar to one that was asked in the questionnaire but with more detail.

From the questionnaire and the graph, I can see that most people watch music videos because they have an interest with the song, and seeing the music being turned into a visual media type is exciting. A majority of people (3 people) like music videos with a narrative, I also prefer music videos with a narrative or for them to have a certain connection with the lyrics because when you listen to music, the lyrics make you build a picture or story in head and its interesting to see what another person imagines when they here that music, like reading a book and then seeing it turned into a film. I found that two people where impressed by the music video by Gotye (somebody that I use to know).

Interviews (monologue):

Thando Mmbo:

I prefer a music video with a narrative because if the song is good, then having a good music video to go with it makes it more interesting. I like the music videos to have a beginning, middle and end like a film because you can only hear music, and music videos make the music visible. I visuals to match the tempo and speed of the music, for example; if the song is upbeat, then I like to see some good choreography in the video. One music video that has caught my eye in the past is a ‘Biggy Smalls’ video but I have forgotten the name of the song, but in the music video he uses kids and it’s almost like a parody of a typical hip-hop music video. I like this because it funny, cheeky, entertaining and yet very smart.

Jenny Fromdebloc:

I like when music videos are random and don’t have a narrative; I think that having a beginning, middle and end to music video defeats the purpose of one. I think that a film structure of beginning, middle and end should stay in in films; I think that music doesn’t often tell a story, but it expresses an emotion and I like a music video to express an emotion rather than tell a story, I could always just watch a movie for that. A music video that caught my eyes in the past is ‘Dani California’ by ‘Red Hot Chilli Peppers’, I love its random, it’s weird and fun like the song, it doesn’t have a story yet it allows you to make your own, to me that’s what I like a music video to be like

Ryan Miles:

I don’t really watch music videos or pay any attention to them when I see them unless I love the song or the artist, but judging from what I see I like my music videos to feature the band or have live footage of the artist like ‘BeyoncĂ©’ ‘end of time’ video because that just makes more sense to me. The music video to the song ‘American Idiot’ by ‘Greenday’ really caught my eye because I love greenday and the song is controversial and it the video they rock out like they do on stage, but they turned everything green, which I thought was awesome.

Annie Rose:

With solo artist I prefer a video with a narrative, but with a band I prefer live performances or live footage because it makes it more interesting and exciting to watch. Depending on the song, the structure of the music video doesn’t matter to me. I like to see actual footage of live performances and good choreography in music videos .BeyoncĂ© single ladies has caught my eye in the past because the performance has now become an iconic choreographic dance

Ben Levi:

I prefer music videos with narrative because it looks better its more interesting. I prefer music videos to be random and not have a structure, because its more interesting. In music videos I like to see, creativity and unreal things, I like it to be a bit fantasy like (in reference to hip hop music videos). In the past I liked Lambrinth ‘Earthquake’ because of the special effects and it looks really cool.
